Roman shades are the quiet achievers of window treatment design. They disappear completely when raised, folding into a neat stack above the window, and transform a room when lowered — bringing soft fabric, warmth, and controlled light into the space in a single movement. Blackout or Privacy, Choose Your Light Control

The first decision in any roman shade project is how much light you want to manage. For bedrooms, nurseries, and home theaters where complete darkness matters, we fabricate blackout roman shades using coated fabrics or blackout-lined construction that blocks all incoming light. For living rooms, kitchens, and dining rooms where the goal is daytime privacy with soft, filtered light still entering the room, we use privacy fabrics that diffuse sunlight without eliminating it. Both options are available in the same fabric library — the light control is handled by the construction, not by limiting your design choices.

Inside Mount or Outside Mount

How a roman shade is mounted changes how it looks and how well it performs. Inside mount shades sit within the window frame, exposing the casing and giving the window a tailored, built-in appearance — a clean choice for rooms where the window architecture is part of the design. Outside mount shades install above and beyond the frame, covering the full casing and providing better coverage at the edges. Outside mount is the more practical choice for blackout applications and for windows with shallow frames that don’t have the depth for inside mount hardware. We cover all four configurations: blackout outside mount, blackout inside mount, privacy outside mount, and privacy inside mount.

Fabric Selection

Roman shades fold horizontally when raised, which means fabric choice behaves differently here than in drapery. Solid linens, soft textures, and subtle woven patterns all translate beautifully into roman shade construction. Large-scale prints require more planning — the fold placement determines which part of the pattern lands at eye level when the shade is lowered. We walk through fabric placement with every client before finalizing an order.

Motorization

Motorized roman shades are increasingly popular in Los Angeles, particularly in kitchens and bathrooms where hands-free operation is a practical convenience, and in rooms with multiple windows where adjusting each shade manually becomes tedious. Tube motors integrate cleanly into the shade header and are compatible with Lutron, Somfy, Apple HomeKit, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa. Battery-powered motors are available where hardwiring is not practical.

Every roman shade we produce is fabricated to the exact dimensions of your window — not cut down from a standard size. We handle measurement, fabrication, and installation from start to finish. Each shade is tested on-site during installation to confirm level mounting, even folding, and smooth cord or motor operation before we leave.
